This course is aimed at Supervisors and First Line Managers who are looking for improvements within their organisation and want to learn more about lean methodologies.

Why should you attend?

Supervisors and First Line Managers are responsible for identifying the root cause of problems and finding solutions. This course will help you to take a deeper dive into problem solving and come up with small scale improvements by applying general principles of lean production (DMAIC), six sigma, kaizen and continuous improvement.

Course outline

During this 5-session course we will cover:

  • Identification of root cause of problems
  • Problem measurement, distinguishing between measurable and descriptive data
  • Distinguish between mean, median and mode; recognise normal distribution and skewed distributions; recognise histograms, bar charts, scatter charts, line graphs, pareto diagrams, run/control charts
  • Distinguish between common cause and special cause variation
  • General principals of lean production (DMAIC), six sigma, Kaizen/continuous improvement and related models
  • Role, purpose, content and structure of a project proposal
  • Appropriate tasks for a small scale improvement project
  • Preparing a small scale improvement project proposal/project charter
  • How to apply improvement methodologies such as lean production
  • Practical application of techniques for measuring and analysing data relating to a problem
  • Practical strategies for improving practices and procedures and for controlling future performance
  • Short report preparation and presentation skills.

Course outcomes

Learning uutcomes, you will learn:

  • How to use lean production and improvement methodologies to measure, analyse, improve and control a service improvement to an activity within your own control
  • How to define a potential service improvement to an activity within your own control using lean production and improvement methodologies
  • How to employ lean production and improvement methodologies to measure and analyse a defined problem, and propose a small scale service improvement and controls
  • How to report on the improvement methodologies and outcomes of the small scale service improvement project


Assessment

There is 1 assignment to be completed during this course and successful completion will result in the following qualification: ILM Level 3 Award in Service Improvement.

Level 4 Improvement Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard

ILM Level 5 Certificate in Service Improvement
