Writing for the Web

Who should attend?

Anyone who contributes to a web site, is redesigning a website, or planning a new site – whether writing/editing copy or working on the technical side. The course is equally suitable for those from small businesses and large ones, and from public, private and third sector organisations.

Why should you attend?

There is more to a good web site than a high ranking on search engines – although this obviously helps. Research shows web browsers are highly purpose driven, scan text rather than read it all, and are quick to judge – so your copy needs to reflect this. We show you how web readers differ and using practical exercises and real examples, provide essential tips on writing for the web – covering issues such as structure and style, language and layout.

Course Outline

  • How web readers differ: the implications for writers of web text
  • Tuning into readers’ needs, and capturing their attention
  • Essential techniques for web writing
  • Learn how to webify your copy
  • Writing blogs and e-newsletters (optional)
  • Search Engine Optimisation: how to improve your ranking on web browsers
  • What makes an eye-catching web page structure
  • Learning from award winning web sites
  • Feedback on delegates’ web sites (optional)
  • Finding the write style; drawing up style guidelines
  • Accessibility – the law and its implication
  • Proofreading on screen
