New Enterprise Allowance

On 5th October the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions announced that the Government would give extra help to unemployed people who want to start their own business through the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA). This new scheme is available to Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) customers who have been claiming for 26 weeks or more.

We are pleased to announce that we are the Lead Accountable Body (LAB) for Gloucestershire & West of England and we shall be advising and supporting 690 clients over the next 20 months to 31st March 2013.

This programme became available from 1st August 2011.

Participants will get access to a volunteer business mentor who will provide guidance and support as they develop their business plan and through the early months of trading. Once a customer can demonstrate they have a viable business proposition with the potential for growth in the future, they will be able to access financial support. This will consist of:-

  • A weekly allowance worth over £1,274 over 26 weeks, paid at £65 a week for the first 13 weeks and £33 a week for a further 13 weeks, and
  • If they need start-up capital, they may also be able to access a loan up to £1,000 to help with their start-up costs
The total package of support could be worth up to £2,274 to each participant who starts their own business.

Clients can be referred to us from Jobcentre Plus offices in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Stroud, Cirencester, Forest of Dean, Bristol, Bishopsworth, Shirehampton, Bedminster, Horfield, Easton, Kingswood, Yate, Bath, Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon.

In order to provide local advice and mentoring support to these unemployed clients wanting to start their own businesses, we are partnering with:-

BRAVE Enterprise

North Somerset Enterprise Agency

Clients wishing to join the scheme must be referred by their Jobcentre Plus Adviser who will verify their eligibility to join the scheme. A client will initially meet one of our experienced Business Advisers to check that they have a suitable and viable business idea. Their particular needs will be identified and the client is then referred to a suitable mentor who will support them in the creation of a business plan over a maximum 8-week period. Once trading begins, the client will continue to receive support and encourangement from their mentor for a further 6 months.
