Wheels in Motion

David's new Venture Puts The Wheels in Motion.

A small business idea led to big business plans for one local man, David Evans

David said “I had been procrastinating for some time about setting up my business and I thought the course would help me focus and calculate whether my idea could be turned from a hobby to a business. I was already coaching a number of clients. However, the business idea has evolved thanks to me joining the Dean Entrepreneurs Programme and I have now deviated a little to something more ambitious!” he commented.

David’s positive experience of the Dean Entrepreneurs programme has given him the confidence to develop his original idea even further. He started out with the intention of focusing on cycle coaching and still continues with this, but he is now also in the process of establishing a new specialist fitness testing facility in Lydney.

The course adopts a practical approach to starting up a business. One of the first sessions concentrates on whether each budding entrepreneur really feels they have the commitment to launch and run a business. Whilst some people haven't thought through what it takes to run a business, others have so many ideas that they need help in sorting them into a logical framework from which a solid business can emerge.

The programme is supported by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas. The project is being delivered through the South West of England Regional Development Agency with Defra as the Managing Authority.

The Dean Entrepreneurs Programme run by Gloucestershire Enterprise and funded by the Local Action Group is very well structured and all the elements, including workshops, group interaction, and lectures fit perfectly together. David added: “I particularly enjoyed the group activities and the liaisons with our business mentor Philip Timson. The practical training coupled with one to one business mentoring sessions really gave me the total support I needed to plan and establish my new business venture. Through the programme I was supported to assess the viability of my idea as a real business as opposed to a hobby.”

David has big plans to grow and develop his business and hopes to eventually employ staff once he has established the new facility. David believes that his style of fitness testing can be extended beyond cyclists and hopes to offer his services to a variety of sporting enthusiasts.
